Most paranormal Investigators are familiar with the term 'New House Syndrome'. This is when someone moves into a new house that has different sounds happening in it than they are used to, and then wrongly attribute these sounds to the paranormal.

Just like a ticking clock on a wall, when people have lived with the sound for a while their brain filters the sound out so they aren't really conscious of it, unless they choose to concentrate on it that it. It's the same effect with 'New House Syndrome'.

My question is do you think there is a danger of Paranormal Investigators suffering from this same effect when they are called in to investigate a property. They are not familiar with the location and it's noises, and are actually making an effort to listen out and record what they perceive to be anomalies.

I'd like to think that a paranormal investigator would look for normal logical explanations before jumping to the paranormal conclusion.
Given that there should be no need to be aware or indeed suffer from new house syndrome.

well I would like to 'think' that too, but I do fear that this would be a contributing factor to some false data in many cases.

How about when building work is carried out on a property?

There is a theory that this sometimes 'stirs up a haunting', when in fact the new pipes that have just been fitted or the wall that has just been knocked down, could really be to blame.

But again, if this is known, the investigators SHOULD be taking it into account.

I'd be damned sure if I had just knocked a wall down and heard bangs the structural engineers would be there before the paranormal investigators.

I agree Anth, but do you think that this may be a possible cause for the 'renovations stir up hauntings' theory?

I can see how it could be misinterpreted. But that would be down to the mentality of the person making the assumption.
As we often say, if someone wants a ghost, a ghost they will have even if its proven to be air in the radiators.

I think this kind of assumption is more common than a lot of people expect and that it is also often the case for people who should really know better.
