Well if Mr. Felix is to be believed it is because they didn't have religion, therefore were not frightened to pass over when they died because of crimes/sins committed in life. I don't believe this theory for one minute and I'm not sure Mr. Felix does either as it sort of contradicts the Stone Tape one that he puts a lot of faith in too.

In my opinion (if ghosts do exist) it's a time thing. Like an echo. these things may start strong and gradually fade away over time. Energy dispersal maybe?

Yeah, pretty much my thinking - but then you could expand upon the "Caveman" question and ask why no Cow ghosts or Sheep ghosts. This came to mind as it came up on QI last week .. We have dog and cat ghosts (pre-dominantly, dog ghost funnily enough) - but not Cow and Sheep ghosts .. or caveman.

There IS a ghostly cow that is sent to haunt a village in the Pennines but its name escapes me for the min (the village that it, not the cow).

We do also keep dogs and cats as pets. Maybe if more of us slept in fields then Cow and Sheep ghosts may be more commonly sighted.

Was going to have a stab at Daisy until you said it was the village you can't remember the name of.

Thats something tho, isn't it? Hellhounds .. Shadowmen .. Demon Possession .. Elementals .. and a bunch of Yokels telling horror stories about a specteral cow ..

Enough to give you goose-bumbs .. Oooaaarrr!

I think perhaps if we still lived in caves there would be cavemen ghosts.

Hah, clever theory.

Not quite the same but it was along the same lines (sort of?) that I posted on another (now gone) forum, where I asked where are the billions of mosquito ghosts. A friend had answered saying that some religion (or maybe several) said that you have to have a soul in order to keep going in an afterlife, which mosquitos just act on instinct alone (fly, suck blood, reproduce if they can), rather than have souls.

Interesting answer.

I have one thing against the "religion" answer - a lot of cultures throughout history have had some form of afterlife they believed in. They may not have all had the Fire & Brimstone version for naughty boys and girls (I'm just guessing - maybe they did) that Christianity does - but I would imagine a simple fear of passing over could have been enough in and of itself.
