Whilst flicking through the latest issue of Fortean Times I came across this piece of research that I found very interesting.
According to a paper by Dr Barrie Colvin in the latest SPR Journal it seems that acoustic analysis of inexplicable banging noises recorded during alleged poltergeist activity show a different sound signature from ordinary banging noises.
10 separate recordings of alleged poltergeist knocking sounds obtained from around the world over 40 years were analysed, including recordings made in the famous Enfield poltergeist case in north London during 1977–79.
It was found that even though the two types of rap sound very similar, they were actually acoustically different. Acoustic experts have been unable to replicate the pattern of the alleged poltergeist raps.
In the case of a normal rap, the sound (which often only lasts a few milliseconds) starts loudly and then decays; while in the case of all the poltergeist raps, the loudest part is near the beginning of the sound, but not at the very beginning.
There is evidence suggesting the sound arises from within the structure of a material rather than from its surface, as would be the case with a normally produced rapping sound.
Dr Barrie Colvin BSc, PhD: “The Acoustic Properties of Unexplained Rapping Sounds” (Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, 2010, vol.73.2 no.899, pp65–93).

Karl and Stewart are going to have a hard time replicating that I think. Although to be fair I bet Ciaran O'Keefe doesn't need to analyse any of their finding as he will know already exactly what's caused them all.

When I first read the title of this post I had this odd idea we'd be talking about a spectral Eminem or Snoop Dog. Glad it's not. If paranormal activity events occur in dimensions that we aren't capable of interacting with or perceiving directly, it could be that energies from such events could cause molecular vibrations that aren't easily explained.
It's suspected that gravity is such a weak force in the universe because it is spread out across many dimensions that we can't yet quantify or measure. which is one theory why it isn't as strong a force as the other forces we interact with. If paranormal activity is simply energy and phenomenon that exist beyond these boundaries then some of that may leak through and cause such manifestations as these and since it's not an energy form native to the dimensions we perceive normally, that might explain the differences in acoustic quality.
I need a lie down now.

So taking Mr Strange's theory in hand it would appear that John and I dont experience ghosties but actually visitations from another dimension? That potentially does explain why I feel energy however when John gets a hit about a certain location or person would it mean that it is from a parallel dimension identical to ours?

Well those events may produce an energy wave that we might look up on as an 'echo' generated by emotions and such, like a bubble that floats through the different layers of the universe, so it may be that he is attuned to such echoes while you work on a different wavelength or frequency, thus attuning yourself to other dimensional planes where other energies are present, or maybe you sense the echoes that John does but in a different way, like two people seeing the same image but one through an ultraviolet lens and another through a heat sensitive one.
