Well to me it's just moving naturally on an air current. As with most of theses things the actual bit of 'dust' is most likely much closer to the camera than it appears. It's probably only a few centimeters away from the lens which would mean that it wouldn't take much movement for it to appear to move towards you.

I'm guessing you'd go for the 'spirit orb' explanation Angie which is fine as there's no real way to prove the footage one way or another. I'm just curious to know why you feel it's more likely of paranormal origin than not. Is it just the way it moves?

It looks interesting, but probably is dust. There is another faint one at about 40 secs going from left to right close to camera. Again though, probably dust. The trouble is, there is so much dust in the air (you only have to notice in a living room when the sun shines in - and we breathe that in!) it is difficult to see it as anything else really.

Good though!

I must admit that I cannot say for deffinate what it is, so is it dust, it could be, is it spirit again it could be, I know dust can go in unusable movements. One of these nights I should open up to spirit and ask out loud for it to move closer to me, or move upwards or downwards so that everyone else can hear. So at the moment I aint agreeing what it is yet ;) still got an open mind on that one

Angie, if you can open up to spirit and get an 'orb' to behave on command then I'll be impressed.... not convinced.. but impressed.

just dust, the air current is always unstable and dosent just travel in one direction, especially closer to us when we are breathing none stop, it wont be a few cm from the camera as mark pointed out because it would be that out of focus it would be invisible to the camera so it would most likly have been closer towards the wall (sorry mark lol) but the movement suggests its just getting blown about, so deffo dust.

Are you sure that it wouldn't be close to the camera Mark. The IR light reflecting off the particle does look blurred to me. I would have thought that if it had been nearer the wall then the camera wouldn't have picked up on it.

i aint marc lol yep am sure basically anything too close to the lens, like dust or other small particles becomes that out of focus that its invisible to the camera, although im not sure what would happen with ir light, but i woulda thought the same as a normal flash, may have to test that one lol. basically the wall area is what the camera was focused on so any dust there again would probably not be seen, but between the wall and camera is out of focus so the reflected ir light would be blured due to lack of focus making it look like an orb.

A--B-----C

so the abc bit above A is the camera between A & B is too close to the camera so dust would be invisible, Between B & C is the out of focus point so any reflected light in this area would be picked up but be out of focus, and C is the focus point so anything at point c is in focus.

well the 'orb' isn't actually the dust itself but rather the reflection of the IR light itself so the camera may be able to pick that up as it would be really bright. There have also been plenty of supposed ghosts that turned out to be an insect actually on the lens though.

One to test I think.

i know but if the dust was close enough to the lens the flash wouldnt reflect off it to cause light or it wouldnt be at the right angle to reflect.. an isect is a fair bit bigger than dust so that would probably be picked up and the light would be absorbed around the insect but not through so would actually make an interesting picture,

now time to find some insects, not spiders though i dont do spiders urgh

The reason orbs appear is because the camera cannot focus on them. Think Macro photography.

They are so close, the camera tries to make sense of them, the great the depth of field capability of the camera, the less orbs will appear on its subsequent images.
We could be talking mm's not cm's.

Dust actually on the ens wont produce an orb though, but it will affect how the orb appears.

Remember an orb is a highlight not the object in its entirety
Exposure times can also cause orbs, and cameras with a small sensor will produce more orb pictures than a cam era with a bigger sensor.

There are a number of factors that affect when you get an orb in a photo. These include:

1 the depth of field of the lens (which is affected by manual zooming and automatic autofocus)
2 the distribution of dust, insects, rain etc in the area, which is effectively random
3 whether a flash is used and how long it goes on for (an automatic function of the camera)
4 how dark the background is

Most of these factors are either uncontrollable, or difficult to control, by the photographer. Therefore, it is difficult to predict exactly when orbs will appear. By sheer chance, orbs are bound to appear by coincidence occasionally at 'significant' times such as when something apparently paranormal is going on.

Orb myths

There are some odd ideas about orbs around. Here are a few of them:

a) Orbs are caused by the close proximity of the flash to the lens on cameras

This is partly true. However, the flash was close to the lens on compact film cameras too without causing many orbs. The reason why orbs suddenly became common with the advent of compact digital cameras was the increase in the depth of field of the lenses used.

b) Orbs are caused by dust, insects and moisture (or water vapour)

The first two are true but not the third. Air always contains water vapour, commonly described as moisture. However, it is an invisible gas. As such, it cannot reflect light and cause orbs, unlike dust. So simply being in a damp place is not a cause of orbs. However, water droplets, like mist or rain drops, CAN cause orbs.

c) Orbs are visible with digital cameras because they are sensitive to infrared

d) Orbs are in focus

Though orbs can have a perfectly crisp outline, they are all out of focus highlights.

Indeed. You'll have to help out with my proposed 'orb experiment' Anth on our team only next week.
