Hi All
I recently had a guided tour around Cherry Knowle Hospital at Ryhope. Unfortunately the old massive Laurels building, thats been closed down for 12 years, was fenced off. I managed to see shadows and heard whispers, but my photos all came out black as the building was too far from the fencing, I do believe this building in now in the hands of English Heritage?
Paranormal activity, as witnessed by staff, has been present for years in the old closed wards, which are still attached to the General Hospital, and have been locked up for about 10 years. I didnt get near to a particular haunted ward as the building closed at 5.oopm, I am making another visit next month, if anything, to hear the voices that are heard from behind the closed and locked doors.

Had a friend who was in there for a while, well when I say friend I mean acquaintance, well more of someone I'd heard about from a friend of a friend........... :D
Always wanted to try something there, sounds like it could be a good place but wondering about gangs, tramps etc in the area?
How are tours done?

The General Hospital is still in use to the public, Mon to Friday, as is other departments scattered about the vast site. The rest can be viewed, best at night. They have security guards patrolling at night, so there are not tramps or othewise. I dont know about tours, as my tour was private and guided by a member of staff, who I know quite well.
The Laurels, which is fenced off, is supposed to be in the pipeline for demolition. This absoultely huge and beautiful building is where i want to go and visit, perhaps a little research and a phone call may bring some joy.
I have heard that English Heritage have taken over this building, but I am not sure.

Am interested in that psychiatric wards with high level of psychic trauma could result in def residual energy and in some cases active.I am primarily empathic in ability so this type of site would hopefully show something

I used to have a multimedia company that made cd roms for tourist places, I can tell you all now that if you contact English Heritage they'll sit on it for 3 years and discuss it in meetings before doing anything about it. The National Trust are the same. I'm still waiting to hear back if I have permission to photo Whitby Abbey for a cd rom project that ended 9 years ago. In the end we just went and took photos and used them and if they had issues with it we knew that by the time they got round to suing us we'd all be dead.

It is an inpressive looking building, for sure they don,t make thing,s like that anymore, there used to be one in aycliffe allthough not like ryhope more moden its been replaced by new houses now, there is one at gainford i often drive past it,s got old red bricks like cherry knowle, its one spooky building ive walked round it a few times with the dogs i think it opened as an orphanage in 1900 then it became a borstal then in more recent times was a nursing home i think it closed about 1998, this place has got to be haunted if you read some of the history of the place there was some pretty strange deaths.i didn,t know about ryhope at the time i was riding my mtb one day up the old railway line and after a few hours riding i saw it across the field i would like a look round it myself maybe not on my own though..............
