I noticed that HairyFairy had brought a plasma ball to our last investigation at Darlington Civic Theatre. I didn't actually get to have a go of it myself, but I was just wondering how you use one in paranormal investigation. Is it just a case or asking any spirits present to affect the plasma in some way?

Well, we've been looking into EMF with regards to the paranormal for some time and investigating it's properties and the supposed effects that ghosts have on magnetic and electric fields.

The plasma ball creates a very strong localised magnetic field and this ionises the air around the ball so that when a fluorescent tube is placed in the vicinity, it lights up.

So there's a few things that can happen here we think. If the tube is placed far enough away that it is not effected by the magnetic field then anything moving between the ball and the tube that can conduct the field will hopefully cause the tube to light. Or, move the tube close to the ball so that it lights up and see if anything can disrupt the field and cause the tube to go out (or at least flicker). Or, anything moving close enough to the ball or touching the ball that can conduct electricity will cause a reaction in the plasma and give the same result as someone touching the outer surface.

It's really an interactive trigger object and needs a camera trained on it all night, but as long as the room is occupied constantly then hopefully someone might see any possible interaction.

As far as I know nothing happened on Friday night.

our group didnt notice anything but we couldnt get the fluro strip light to switch on and didnt want to move it too much to find the switch. Its a top idea this and I'll be very interested to see what results you get with it!

We did use it in calling out and asked anything about to affect it for us but nothing was noticed

yeah, shame there wasnt a camera on it all night!

Thanks for that Scipios, that answers my question. The only problem I have with it is that I think its a great idea and want one now.

The switch for the light was at one end but you don't need to switch it on for this to work. The gases inside the light become excited whenever the light is within an electric field.

Those plasma balls were 9.99 from Maplins, a bargain I think. We hope to be carrying out more electrical and magnetic experiments in time.

Nah its nothing like that Dr, the thing is as with all experiments we think of we like to see if they actually work before letting the cat out of the bag so to speak!

If we find they dont work then we wont bother with them, but if they seem to have a place in the investigation then we will let everyone know about them.

But i must ask you to keep this to yourself, its top secret. This message will self distruct in 5...................4............................3

BANG
