Post subject:  Tesco Bedlington

Hi everyone, this is my first post, and reading the header I know there will be people thinking im having a laugh. But im not, so please bear with me. Back in the early eighties, I worked in a supermarket in the market place in Bedlington, it was called Presto then, its now a Tesco express. This supermarket is built on an incline, eg the front is higher than the back. Therefore the warehouse was round the back at a lower level with a lift up to floor level. One evening after the store had closed I was one of a crew in re stocking for the next days trade. I had to go downstairs for some stock, I was waiting by the lift downstairs when I turned around and saw a black labrador walk alongside the wall at the other end of the warehouse, this threw me, as the store had been closed for two hours, all the doors where locked, except the firedoors which were very heavy and only opened from the inside, these were closed but not locked. The hair stood up on the back of my neck, I ran upstairs, brought down other staff, as I would not re enter alone, we searched but no dog was found, no doors were open for it to escape, and no one could explain it. A couple of weeks later a girl was downstairs getting a case of bananas from a chiller, she picked one up, put it outside the chiller, went in for something else, when she came out, the bananas had vanished. She thought she maybe hadnt picked a case up after all, so got another one, when she came out of the chiller the box was back!! No one else was present at the time. We once had to pull a door handle out of a wall in an office downstairs when it was pushed open violently by an unseen force, also on another occasion, five of us watched while something was banging on the inside of a security cage full of sweets, this cage was made of wood and chicken wire, it wasnt totally secure, but built to stop us eating what we shouldnt have, which didnt always work! Nothing was seen inside the cage but it was shaking noisily as though something was banging a case off the inside of it. Once I nearly got sacked because of whatever was there, as one night I had to lock up the shop, being a key holder, I locked all the doors downstairs, then locked the warehouse doors that led to the stairs and upstairs, then set the alarms, locked the store and went home. Next day I went in as normal, only to be collared by the manager, asking what the hell I was playing at last night? I did not know what he meant so he dragged me downstairs. He pointed through the glass on the doors to the warehouse, there was sugar spread on the floor from one end of the warehouse right up to the doors which were still locked. I argued that it wasnt me, which it wasnt!! He didnt believe me of course, then I realised that, the sugar could only have been placed there after the doors were locked as the brushes on the bottom of the doors would have left a semicircle in the sugar, and there was no marks at all, no footprints either and no alarm went off. I dont know if you`ll be able to get permission, but if you do I`d love to come along, but under no circumstances will I go there on my own! Mick.

Sounds very interesting! Anyone else think we should investigate this place? I live in Cramlington, so it should be easy for me to get to the location.

Hi Pam, it was mainly the warehouse, however there was the "bouncing beachball" incident at the top of the ramp behind the glass when the store was locked up on a saturday. I dont know if anything has happened in the years since I have left though. Mick.

Is it a Tesco Extra. Cos I really hate the small Tesco's. I love to be able to go and have a meal at the cafe, watch some telly in entertainment section, Try on some new clothes, before finishing with the food shopping.

Im up for it if it has all those.... :o

tesco express it says, whatever that means....

Post subject:  Re: Tesco Bedlington

TuT TuT I cant be having that. Tesco express is Tescos attempt at the corner shop, only slightly bigger. They only sell newspapers, confectinary, alcohol and a few groceries. At over exessive prices. Not like the Extra stores that sell everyhting and cheaply.
