If I remember rightly, I think there is a plaque on the wall of the blue bell stating it's supposedly haunted by one of the worker from the railway bridge in yarm.

I think there was either an accident in the blue bell killing the workers, or there was an accident on the actual bridge itself. I'm not sure I can't remember exactly.

I was wandering if you've ever been there? If not could be worth a visit.

I'll check up and see what I can find out, but I can't find anything online at the minute.

Have you never read the plaques on the wall outside? Maybe I'm wrong. I can't remember.

I did a little digging, didn't have to look far it's on the plaque outside the front door.

It's suposed to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord from the time when the viaduct was being replaced by a cast iron, which collapsed. He recovered one of the iron girders and layed it in the foundations of the pub.

I don't know how true it is, I can't find anything online, possibly just a rouse to get people talking. lol

The gentleman in question was an ex landlord called George Goldie. I literally grew up in that pub and as a child my favorite place was the back room where a beam, taken from the old wooden Yarm bridge that had collapsed was fixed into the ceiling and there was also an old photo of George himself hung next to the fire place. As a child I would often talk to George who "helped" me with the opening of the pub, pulling down stools etc. I would sometimes start on one side of the room only to find that when I turned round that half of the stools I needed to take down had already been taken down, and believe me when I say there was no way somebody else could have come in and done it without having been in my line of sight. Another occasion I found a present of £5, in one pound coins, perfectly lined up underneath 5 stools that still needed to be taken down. They could not have been there the night before and I know for sure that my mother had not left them there for me! I said thank you George and went swimming with my friends.
The pub had a guard dog for a good few years, a Doberman called Solar who would physically shake and whine if the cellar door behind the bar was left open. One day my mother actually saw George pass behind the bar and through the cellar door, not a shadow, but the man himself.
George was a big bloke, tall and portly. In fact his coffin had to be carried down the stairs vertically to get him outside. He was a generous and kind hearted man, loved by all who knew him. I never felt scared by him, even though the hairs on the back of my neck would often stand up with no apparent reason. Years later I returned to the pub to babysit in the upstairs flat. Whilst watching tv in the living room I suddenly heard water running in the kitchen but as soon as I closed the taps in the kitchen I heard running water coming from the bathroom. I closed the taps in the bathroom only to hear water running again in the kitchen. At this point I said "George, it's only me", and everything went back to normal. Please note that one of the children I was babysitting for was a baby, fast asleep in his cot, the other, a toddler was by my side throughout, no one else was in the flat!
I don't know if George has stuck around the Blue Bell after they destroyed, er renovated it, but he definitely existed. Yarm library has more info and books about the history of the place. Hope that this info helps :D

Hi, thanks for all the extra info about George and the Blue Bell. It sounds like something we should definitely follow up.

If you are wondering why this forum seems a bit dead, it is because everything has migrated to Facebook which is a shame as I much prefer this kind of forum.

If you have a Facebook account you can catch up with all the latest NGI news, debates and tomfoolery in our group on the following link.

Hi, I am already following the Facebook Page, but like yourself, I prefer these kind of forums. I no longer live in the Uk but all My family are still there, so if you ever do decide to investigate I would love to join you all. Not sure if George has hung around after the renovations, but could be worth a chat with the new landlord and bar staff.

No worries at all. If we do get anywhere with this I'll post it here.
