I like the way the Sun is taking it seriously by overlaying a picture of Elliot and ET on it!!

This is a good little story tho - something has hit a wind-turbine, little doubt. I would think if it was something like a helicopter then it would have come down nearby as those blades are quite a bit chunky. Coupled with the reports of people reporting a number of lights in the sky beforehand .. who knows?

My predicition : story will appear in a couple of days with an official / man / kid with big sad puppy eyes claiming how his military aircraft / personal helicoptor / toy plane has been smashed cos it hit a wind-turbine.

Nothing to worry about then .. totally explainable.

Story will probably conclude with : "I never realised it at the time - its only when I saw the story in The Sun that I thought to link the big bang and shudder I heard and felt and the fire ball of death I had to make an emergency landing with at the time with me possibly hitting a wind-turbine. It makes sense now!"

We all have secret skills Dok - but I prefer to be the shadow-behind-the-medium. In the background ... watching ... wielding my power while all the attention is on somebody else ..

Its been an even better attempt to explain that I imagined ..

Fireworks and a block of ice

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/jan/0 ... urbine-ufo

I'm not doubting the suggestion .. but ..

Very interesting theory

On one hand they say that it would have to be something the weight of a cow to damage the turbine, but then it is suggested that a firework shot from a nearby garden could of done it, or at least explained the lights (if the person was so far away and dunk...... and very stupid). Then it is suggested that the cow sized bit of ice could have fallen off a plane despite the face that there was no reported planes in the area at that time and the fact that there was no Ice left at the scene. It has been so cold recently that a lump of ice the size of a cow would have surely been there the next morning.

I think they need to come up with some more theories.

Material fatigue which lead to mechanical fault, I think. If it's caused by some hot material, like firework, fireball, etc....then where are the burnt marks ? And if it's a collision by something ( which claimed to be a UFO for this case ), the entire tower would have collapsed or at least the rotor housing would have been gone instead ! Just my opinion. 8)

What are the Germans going to conclude that we can't? "Zit Iz brocken - sumfink it it" ..

Or do the Germans have a "UFO hitting a wind turbine analysis division"?

See my "is the world becoming too complicated?" thread in the sceptics section for relevencey!!! :D

Im afraid its simple.

Its metal fatigue. Some time back locally to me there was a simmilar incident. One of the blades had sheared off which then left the other blades out of balance and they buckled.
There was no big "its a ufo" story though because there were no bright lights involved. It was just an incident.
The photo of the bright light is just a sun dog, please google sundog cos i cant explain it LOL

I know snowlord has some fantastic pictures of sundogs though.

Behave Hairy! Stop being boring and giving an "explanation" .. It was ET and he's now got a knackered space ship ... Maybe we should phone local garages and see if someone has put a funny looking car in for repair??

So sundogs and metal fatigue. I can accept it may be metal fatigue, i cna accept it would have put the other blades out of balance.....what I cant accept is that when out of balance only one other blade would buckle and bend in the fashion it has.
Surely if off balance the most damage would occur in the central hub and the bearings?

I dont think it was a UFO either, but thats besides the point.

I'm sort of with Anth on this one. I can understand a blade falling off due to metal fatigue, but not having it cause another blade to buckle like that due to an imbalance. Then again I'm no engineer.

I just posted this on another forum:

I reckon it was either a mechanical failure, or a lightning strike. the latter would certainly go some way to explaining the reports of an octopus-like light formation seen in the sky prior to the incident.

Very unlikely to be striked by lightning, there's hardly any sign of burnt mark on the damaged areas. 8)

Why would only one blade bend and buckle???
They have three blades and all three are balanced, if one is out or falls off then the other two are totally out of kilter and hense the damage.

There is probably damage in the centre hub and bearings, but these things are held on with huge bolts, for that to go would be disasterous, therefore its the blades take the ultimate damage.
You see the exact same damage done on rotar blades on helicopters!
When on fails you get the exact same unbalance occur, the rotars buckle in the same way because they are out of balance.
