Question - Can Parapsychology be actually classed as a real science?

No because probable cause is still just speculation and speculation is not science fact until it is then the validity of the letters after your name means nothing at all your still just as guessing. :P

these people are no closer to grasping the truth than someone who sees spirit and is deemed a fake.

I sort of agree with you there Wayne. I don't think it can be classed as a Science either, maybe a 'Fledgeling Science'.

I read a good quote recently which was:
"You first have to catch a rabbit before you can explore the different ways to make rabbit stew" which I think if fairly apt here.

Well as usual theres different ways to look at it.

Psychology is a science.
Para psychology is a way of looking into things not covered by "normal" psychology.

So its based on a science but investigating the unknown.
Which is what most science research does.

You cant learn unless you investigate, and you cannot investigate without learning.

Unfortunately theres little evidence of what we are all looking for when you apply these facts.

All you can do is try to fill in the gaps for yourself , it doesnt matter if people with letters after their names tell you they are right , they could very well be very wrong, the reality you see may be very different from the reality someone else sees, the only thing you can rely on is that matter is energy and it continues to transform in a myriad of ways, and many of these ways have yet to be firmly established as fact because the understanding of these events is still very much speculation, and unless you have a personal life changing experience that leaves you without fear of death or transformation you will no doubt continue to ask yourselves these questions over and over for the rest of your days no matter how many people with various takes on the subject try to convince you otherwise.

It largely depends on how you determine what a science is.

If you go by a definition such as this...

"The investigation of natural phenomena through observation, theoretical explanation, and experimentation, or the knowledge produced by such investigation."

...Then parapsychology can't be a science as it doesn't deal with any known natural phenomena.

But using this other definition...

"The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena."

...Then you can legitimately describe parapsychology as a science as long as you're using scientific principles when researching and investigating etc.

People a lot of the time put Para-Psychology in the same sentence as Paranormal. PS only touches base with the paranormal. Ps is more of a study of psychological phenomena, such as extra-sensory perception, psychokinesis.
