Have modern paranormal TV shows killed of traditional paranormal investigation with teams simply emulating what they see in the media?

If teams don't end up emulating those tv shows, what will happen is a generation will grow up thinking that's how it's done and they'll become the paranormal investigators and make that kind of thing standard practice.

I think whats an interesting (and scary) thought is how would a two-bit Most Haunted inspired ghost hunt group handle a case such as the Enfield Poltergeist if one cropped up ..

I'm sure it would be funny ..

I'm sure they'd deal with it by clubbing it over the head with boxes of useless equipment.

I don't think they have killed off traditional paranormal investigation. Yes many teams will emulate what they have seen, but some will develop their own ways of investigation, and hopefully out of this will come better evidence over time. And it keeps people off the streets...

There are positives and negatives with paranormal TV. Of course it does not show the reality of investigating, which is lots of time with not much happening, but it does keep the subject alive..lol.

I must admit that I do watch a lot of paranormal TV and have a soft spot for it. What amazes me is how many people in teams don't look further into the subject, such as reading a book for example. I've spoken to people who claim to have been investigating for years and don't have the slightest idea who the likes of Harry Price or Peter Underwood actually are.

I wonder if its because the paranormal has so many different organisations like ASSAP, SPR, MAPIT that don't really push themselves out there or have a unified presence that demands people learn (edit: I know some do encourage it) Which to be fair they can't force you to, because it is after all a hobby or interest. What I mean is that people can go on investigations for years (like you say) and not have to learn about any aspect of what has gone before. Such as the history, famous cases, techniques etc, so someone could have 20 odd years experience of investigations, and not know anything beyond their own experiences..maybe some people don't like reading I suppose. :? :D

It is kind of weird when you think about it. I'm still in the learning zone myself, having come from a slightly different angle towards the paranormal. I still have lots to read and learn, but thats what makes it so interesting.

And of course it being such a practical subject, its kind of understandable why people don't bother doing anything other than go on invos. Still a bit amazing though, like you said..

I have to admit I dislike most Haunted with a passion but I like the Ghost Adventures getting locked in a reportedly haunted location all night with just a torch, camcorder, EMF Meter and a voice recoreder is right up my street.

Most Haunted was the first ghost show i ever watched. Lots of running around in the dark and 'wooo' noises. Nearly every show they heard a bloody woo!!! No chance.

I do like TAPS, they're looking for ways to disprove it and not exclusively looking for ghosts.

That said, how can you take anything you see on tv as gospel nowadays?!

That's a good point. I enjoy watching TAPS too. It's good to get their views on investigating and modern 'paranormal trends', and when you don't agree you can always throw things at the screen.

Today on Ghost Hunters they investigated an old house and buildings linked with the American civil war.

Sitting in the front room they heard a humming noise 'hmm hmm, hmm hmmmm' and footsteps. And in the well house Jay's light turned on after he introduced himself and a couple of times after even though he wasn't touching it...

Hahaha Most Haunted! The shows that got me into the paranormal and they were a load of rubbish.

Every episode you'd hear a 'ooooooh' and Yvette would drop a baby out!

Ghost Adventures is a pretty good show ive been watching it on Netflix recently, its better than Most Haunted I think. The GA guys seem a bit more professional than the MH lot.

after finding out the fakery of MH ~I never really gave any other paranormal shows much time. I should watch one or two episodes of one of the American shows and see what I think... just MH has poisoned my mind in believing that genuin stuff does happen on a show
