team of 'ghostbusters' which was called in to investigate ghostly happenings at Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth reckon an historic part of the base could be haunted by French Napoleonic soldiers and young children.

A few eyebrows were raised when the tough guys of her majesty's forces called in a team of 'ghostbusters' to investigate spooky happenings at Plymouth's Devonport Naval base.

Young naval ratings and security guards have been spooked by a strange atmosphere and reported ghostly sightings at the Hangman's Cell at the base.

Now, it seems they may have been right to call in the ghostbusters!

The 20-strong team of psychic mediums included seven members of the Cornwall-based Paranormal Research Organisation.

The team was put together by Middlesex-based group, Ghost Investigator, led by Goldy Bromley.

Together with four Royal Navy personnel, the 20 investigators spent two nights in the cell in May 2004 - and detected signs that the place IS haunted.

The theory is that the spirits could be from French Napoleonic soldiers who died in the cell. It's believed 141 were executed at the base.

The mediums also communicated with the spirits of young children.

They've now been invited back by the Royal Navy for a second visit - scheduled for October 2004.

The team armed themselves with with scientific apparatus including 0-lux night vision video cameras, digital stills cameras, electro-magnetic field meters, laser thermometers, digital voice recorders and motion detectors.

They also deployed a panoply of non-scientific equipment such as dowsing rods, which are used to detect spirit presence and obtain information from that spirit through psychic dowsing.

Ian Addicoat from Cornwall said: "Obviously we will know more when the evidence has been looked at in more depth and reports from our team have been correlated, but it was a very interesting investigation."

For instance during a darkness vigil, orbs - which experts take to be energy given off by a spirit presence - were captured on the night vision machinery, appearing when the French national anthem was hummed.

And there seemed to be some sort of response when the investigators spoke in French.

The team also experienced many unexplained temperature drops - regarded as a sign of the presence of spirits.

Goldy, from West Drayton, said: "We were able to communicate with the spirits and bring them down to us. We got to know the children.

"We've got video footage and photographic evidence as well."

She added: "We want to release a lot of souls which have been trapped there. There is unfinished business and it needs a second visit, and we have been imvited back in October."

One of the investigators, Barbara Jones, said there was no doubt they detected paranormal activity.

Although they did not see any ghosts, they had "very good" photographic evidence, yet to be analysed, which had them "jumping up and down."

Ian, 32, says he is actually a sceptic when it comes to these things: "But only in the true definition of the word," he explained. "Questioning all occurrences to an empirical level."

He added: "All in all it was a very interesting investigation and the team would love to do a return visit."

The investigators expect to submit their report to the Royal Navy in the next few weeks.

Before the exercise, Commander Charles Crichton said: "The people who walk here report spiritual activity to me all over the place - it's rampant."
