A TV psychic last night hit out at reports that he is to attempt to 'make contact' with the spirit of soccer legend George Best in his upcoming Belfast shows.

There was widespread anger after a Sunday newspaper reported that Derek Acorah, star of TV3's Most Haunted, would be pulling the sick stunt at a Waterfront Hall show next month. But Acorah is insisting there will be no reference whatsoever to George Best in his shows. A statement released through Belfast City Council said: "Derek Acorah said he was distressed to hear of an article in relation to his contacting of George Best during a show next month at Belfast's Waterfront Hall "Mr Acorah did not originate any comments on this issue and was responding to questions put to him by a journalist. Furthermore, the journalist misquoted what he said." The statement continued: "Mr Acorah will not be including any reference whatsoever in any of his shows to George Best and will not make any further comment on this issue as he is only too aware of, and regrets, the distress that the reporting of this story has already caused to the Best family."

The original article had brought an angry response from George's family who said cynical profiteers were trying to cash in on the football legend's death.

Bestie's brother-in-law Norman McNarry had told the Belfast Telegraph that reports in the Sunday media about the soccer legend were "not worthy of comment".

The iconic Best died last November, aged 59, after a long and well-documented battle with alcoholism. He is buried beside his mother, Ann, at Belfast's Roselawn Cemetery.

Derek Acorah is a popular but controversial British cable and satellite television personality, who came to fame as a purported "psychic medium" - a person who claims to be able to talk to the dead.

As well as his TV work he has sold out theatre tours across the UK.
