Post subject:  Harry Potter 'satanic': Pope's exorcist

The Vatican has never been a fan of Harry Potter, but its chief exorcist has gone one step further and condemned J. K. Rowling's fictional boy wizard as downright evil.

"Behind Harry Potter hides the signature of the king of the darkness, the devil," Father Gabriele Amorth, the Pope's "caster-out of demons", said.

The books contained many positive references to the satanic art, falsely drawing a distinction between black and white magic, he told the Daily Mail in London. Father Amorth also said he was convinced that Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler were possessed by the devil.

Last year the Pope, then Cardinal Ratzinger, described Harry Potter as a potentially corrupting influence. The Vatican's criticism comes as two Australian academics suggest a new generation of spiritual seekers are using popular fiction and medieval myth to add magic and enchantment to their lives. Lynne Hume and Kathleen McPhillips, editors of a new collection of essays on popular spiritualities, said sacred religious texts and scriptures were in many places being superceded by medieval myths, comics and fantasy literature.

J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Terry Pratchett's Discworld series had inspired interest in spiritual spin-offs.

Pagans had borrowed from the Discworld series peopled by dwarfs, witches and fairies, while young men had shaped their living fantasies on comic-book heroes and Star Wars narratives.

Role-playing games of the 1990s such as Ravenloft and Dungeons and Dragons spurred interest in acting out fictional characters and events.

The eclectic vampire subculture - bigger in the US and splintering from the '70s Goth movement - borrows more from Anne Rice's broody, immortal and powerful figure of Lestat in the Vampire Chronicles than Bram Stoker's figure of old. The subculture, said Dr Hume, consists of vampire role players but also people who believe they are vampires, blood donors and occult-based and mystically oriented groups.

Post subject:  Harry Potter is a God

"Jesus of Nazareth" "The Greatest Story Ever Told" "The Robe" "The Last Temptation of Christ" etc etc ... were only films as well. Fictional at that, to an extent. After all, the story of Christ and his cohorts were all derived from a book. Some of the names may have existed in part, and some of the stories may be true to an extent, but the Vatican is still contradicting itself. The Bible is a fictional book. Full of inconsitencies and contradictions. If someone tried to publish it today with a reputable book company, they would piss themselves laughing.

Who's to say that J K Rowling didn't base her books on a spotty teenager with a craft to amaze people with his magical powers? After all, the Magic Circle is full of Harry Potter wannabe's. And I hope Rowling does make people want to be something that they aspire to everytime they see or read about Harry Potter. Good for her and to "Hell" with the Vatican.

One more thing... show me in the Bible where it mentions Hell?

It doesn't.

Did you watch that film? It was terrible.

It was one of those movies that everyone tells you not to go see, but you do. Matrix Reloaded was another one.

I'm a Christian but not devout.
