AN investigation has been launched amid claims TV crews damaged historic Southsea Castle while filming a ghost-hunting stunt.

English Heritage says it will investigate whether criminal damage was inflicted on the castle by a television company filiming the programme Most Haunted.

LIVINGtv, which produced the programme, had permission from the city council to dig a four-foot hole in the castle's moat.
But English Heritage says the work appears to have been carried out without proper supervision or permission.

The castle is a designated ancient monument, and English Heritage should have been informed of the work and says a professional archaeologist should have supervised it.

The council's head of museums service, Paul Raymond, said: 'We should have informed English Heritage and we didn't but I did have qualified staff there with practical experience of archaeology. They recorded the dig with photographs and recovered some pottery which was discovered.'
