We've all seen the films...but what exactly does a modern day exorcism in England actually entail?

What would quantify the basis for an exorcism?

Are people exorcisms different to place exorcisms (apart form the obvious there!)?

There seems to be a grwoing trend at the moment of 'exorcims', especially people who claim to be able to do this.

Can a spychologist do just as good a job?

Hey Pollen you been a busy bee :P

I watched a series called A Haunting on the discovery channel and in quite a few of the episodes exorcisms where performed, infact they looked similar to the ones on the movies  i.e tie the subject up so they cannot harm themselves or anyone else, mumble loads of stuff out of the bible, the crucifix and holy water also played a part.

I don't know if these where hyped up for TV as the events are re-enacted, but you do have interviews with the priests and people involved ect. I don't know if the ones portrayed on those are the exact way the are performed for real as i have never witnessed one and wouldn't like to say.

As for house exorcisms/blessings my sister used to claim her house was haunted by a nasty man and the spirit of a young child, and it caused her and her kids quite a bit of fear and distress, in the end she had someone from the church come out and bless the house. On a whole she says the kids don't feel the presence of the nasty man no more, but she said sometimes the house still feels weird.

Can a psychologist do just as good a job i couldn't say, but i have read and watched programmes about poltergeists, that have pointed out that people can create their own poltergeists by negative thinking and emotionional problems. This negative energy can manifest into a poltergeist, and from what i have read and watched this type on phenomenon can be really hard sort out, so i guess a psychologist could help with some circumstances.

RSPK, recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis, linked to exteriorization could be creating some of these problems,,,,,,,

In my opinion the growing 'popularity' of exorcisms don't really resemble the 'classic Catholic casting out of demons' sort.

The exorcising of people seems to involve a lot of 'deliverence ministry' nowadays. This seems to be getting more and more common in the States, with people going along to their churches believing they are possessed (on a weekly basis it seems sometimes) for the evangelical minister to 'cast out' the evil spirits in a grand manor while the 'possessed' person generally freaks out a bit. To me this seems like a sort of 'confessional on acid'.

Exorcising places seems to involve many 'mediums' going into locations and telling the 'spirits' to go to the light or whatever (sometimes with a bit of a tussle). Nowadays it seems that 'mediums' don't even have to go to a location and claim to be able to do house clearings from their very own homes. These kind of exorcisms seem to do very little as I've lot count of the number of times I've heard buildings have been 'cleared' only for the reported activity to continue as normal.

Psychology and counselling has been shown to be effective when dealing with Poltergeist cases and I feel that exorcisms could work in the same way, in that a person who is convinced they have evil spirits may feel better knowing that they have been dealt with. I do feel that the 'drama' of an exorcism can have the opposite effect though and make matters much worse.

I agree. If I accept that there is a chance of 'evil' spirits being real (which I do), then I've really got to accept that 'real' exorcisms are valid.

Besides 'The Exorcist' is my favourite film of all time.
