The Greenbank - Investigation Report

We were fortunate to receive an invite to investigate the Greenbank, a guest house in central Darlington, on a cold and wet Sunday night in September. We started off with only 3 groups on the investigation but changed the groups around during the break (and went to 4 groups and not all got to visit each location) hence why you may wonder what’s going on in respect of this report!

How we Heard About The Greenbank

Dell, one of the Northern Ghost Investigations team was friends with John who worked at the Greenbank and it was He who had expressed an interet in NGI visiting guest house.

Dell himself had also experienced one or two strange things when visiting the Greenbank and so, with these two nudges in mind - off we trekked for an investigation.

The History Of The Greenbank

There is little available information in regards the history of the Greenbank other than it was built orginally as a normal everyday street house and then was eventually converted (after the aquiring of a few neighbouring properties) into the Guest House that it is today.

The Paranormal History Of The Greenbank

Only a few tales and stories exist about the guest house from John and from NGIs own Dell of a number of strange atmospheres and sensations that can be felt around the location.

The Greenbank - Baseline Report

Before every investigation we conduct a thorough examination of the location site to highlight anything within the environment which may interfere or influence with any later investigation through the night. For instance, if there is a railway line nearby which, with the passing of trains throught the night, could cause virbrations in within the location - we'll make sure it's noted down

We also take readings throughout the investigation site (see actual locations) so as to set a baseline which all further readings can be compared againt. At present, we currenly take readings concerning the Temperature, Humidity and of the local Electro-Magnetic Field.

The Greenbank - The Bar

The bar was a fascinatingly decorated room with military memorabilia adorning every square inch. Uniform dressed mannequins; old canons; toy soldiers; photographs, letters and medals upon the walls and sideboards. A real military buff’s wet dream really.
The bar had 2 areas – an upper area (containing a pool table – not a military pool table though!!) and a bottom area were the actual bar was situated.

Baseline Report

There was nothing noted within this location that could effect the investigation

Environment Readings

No baseline readings were taken in this location

Pre-Investigation Walkaround

Before any investigation starts some members of Northern Ghost Investigations including our own resident medium (or guest mediums if present) like to have a walk around the investigation site and then record their own first impressions. What follows are details of the first impressions of those who did do a walk around.

A Walkaround With All

During the group walkabout Claire, Jay, Bekki, Mark and Tillie made their way up the second floor family room area. They decide to enter Room 17 (Lady Emma Hamilton) but Bekki could not open the door. Claire decided to have a go at turning the key in the lock but it still wouldn't budge. Bekki decided to have another go and the key did turn. She managed to open the door although she said it did 'put up some resistance as if something was pushing on the door from inside'. Claire thought the door may have been being wedged against the carpet but this was checked and found not to be the case.

Various other members had a go at locking, unlocking and opening the door. They managed it every time without too much problem but did report that both the door and lock were a bit stiff.

Mark set up a camera at the foot of the second flight of stairs where people had reported seeing fleeting figures.

Group Vigils

What follows are the group vigils that took place in this location.

Note : These vigils are presented purely in Group Order and in no way reflect the order
in which each group visited the location during the night.

Group 1

NGIers - Claire, Bekki

Guests - Shaun, Michelle

As Claire was about to enter here she saw Bekki stood still in the doorway, and she said she was picking something up there. The other group were still in there when the dog started barking and growling at Bekki. When Claire went in the room and asked what had happened it seemed that at the same time Bekki had felt something in the door the dog had leapt up at her barking. Shaun said it was because Bekki had startled the dog. Claire can’t comment as she was out of the room at the time, see Bekkis / Jays / Dells report for this. However Bekki was just starting to tell Claire about this (Claire had seen Bekki 'startle' slightly and asked her why) when the dog came at her, so he hadn’t just got to the doorway at that moment.

Once the others left Claire sat in the chair in the window, Bekki was to her left, Paddy to her right in the other chair in front of the bar and Michele and Shaun were over near the far wall in chairs, all of us in the bar bit of the room not the pool room.
Claire had now decided not to use the laser temp to take baselines with, especially as it was such a large area to cover. Bekki said there were too many electrical things to get any useful EMF readings.

They sat in this location just observing etc. The previous group had remarked that Paddy was behaving oddly, however he didn’t seem to during this vigil. Shaun said it was probably because they were with him now.

At times Bekki sat in Paddies chair when he sat on the floor.

When she was to the left of Claire Bekki said she could see the light moving. Claire could also see this but Michele and Shaun couldn’t. Claire said although she could see it moving the shadow of it wasn’t, which made her think it wasn’t actually moving. When the light was put on it was plainly seen by all that it wasn’t moving, but when the light was off Claire and |Bekki could both see it moving, even though they knew it wasn’t, as they put the light on and off several times with the same results etc. They put it down to some kind of optical illusion for want of a better explanation! As it wasn’t paranormal once this was ascertained interest in it was lost.

Bekki and Claire both called out for anything present to come and make the light move, yet no change was observed.

A guest returned during this location and his footsteps could clearly be heard, however the exact time was not noted.

Group 2

NGIers - Jay, Dell

Guests - John

This was our first location of the night and we settled down for a quiet sit throughout the bar. Jay was separate from the rest for a while, choosing to sit in the upper area alone with his sound enhancing headphones on while the other sat at the bottom end of the bar.
Almost immediately Jay picked up on footsteps seemingly walking along the corridor outside. He thought it was possible that he could be hearing footsteps from deeper in the Greenbank, but Dell quickly dashed this idea when he called up to Jay that he could hear footsteps from beyond the wall.

Jay went out to the corridor to check that nobody was present and found it to be empty. When he came back into the bed, he joined the others in the bottom area of the bar.

Dell mentioned that he felt there was somebody in the room with us standing just behind where he was sat. Indeed, the Paddy the Dog kept climbing to his feet and staring at the spot where Dell was talking about before settling down for a few minutes.

Jay began to call out hoping to make contact with any spirits that may have been present. At first there was quiet; no response at all. However, shortly into the spell, a loud bang was heard. The noise wasn’t in the bar area where we were sat but was outside the bar. We made sure to check with the other groups later to discern whether they had heard the bang themselves and whether or not the noise was from one of them (a door slamming, for instance) – both queries produced a negative : No one was responsible and no one else heard it. Quite strange given the loudness of it.

Group 3

NGIers - Mark

Guests - Tilly

Mark and Tillie sat in silence in the comfy leather chairs near the bar. Nothing of note was reported and Tillie drifted off in a light sleep.

The Greenbank - Room 29

A large bedroom situated amongst the labyrinth of corridors of the Green bank. A four poster bed and a smaller bed dominate the room and an en suite bathroom could be found off to the side.

Baseline Report

Group 2

NGIers - Jay, Dell

Guests - John

Upon entering the room, Dell stated that he felt a strange feeling. He wanted to look under the large 4 poster bed that dominated the room. This might not seem worthy of note, but he stated that the feeling lasted with him the entire time we were in the room. However, resisting the urge Dell sat in the chair situated under the bay window and John plonked himself down on one of the beds. Jay went into the bathroom and sat on the loo.

This was a very quiet room whilst we were here barring a couple of incidents; one incident concerned noises that could be heard in the bathroom when Jay was calling (very light taps seemingly in response to questions being asked). Jay and John swapped positions and John confirmed the noises and that they did, seem, to be in response to questioning.

When Jay had been back in the bathroom for a short while, he walked out and as he did, there was a fairly loud bang on one the walls in the bedroom. It was difficult to determine which wall the sound came from and a small discussion was had between Jay and Dell (who had also heard it) who couldn’t come to a firm agreement from which wall the noise was heard.

No source for either of the above noise incidents could be found.

Jay later came back into Room 29 with Claire but nothing of note happened.

Group 3

NGIers - Mark

Guests - Tilly

EMF: The only EMF detected in this room is from the bathroom light which registered 10+MG when on.

Both Mark and Tillie got a smell of bleach on entering this room. Tillie sat on the 4 poster bed and Mark is sat on the chair by the window.

00.05 Tillie complained she was feeling colder than ever and a temperature check reveals that she was now at 19.2ºC compared with Mark who was 19.2ºC

00.10 Tillie said that she felt that it was getting colder so Marks decided to keep monitoring her temperature which was now at 23.4ºC (The warmest she had been in this room). Every effort was made to sample her temperature in the same place and from the same distance.

Mark conducted a short EVP experiment which provided no positive results.

00.19 Tillie said her body felt freezing but her temperature had not dropped by much and was at 22.2ºC

00.24 Tillie's final temperature reading for this vigil was 20.6ºC

The Greenbank - Room 24

A small room at the top of one of the main sets of stairs in the Greenbank. The only furniture in the room was a double bed, a dresser and a couple of chairs. Again, an en suite bathroom.

Group Vigils

What follows are the group vigils that took place in this location.

Note : These vigils are presented purely in Group Order and in no way reflect the order
in which each group visited the location during the night.

Group 1

NGIers - Claire, Bekki

Guests - Shaun, Michelle

The first 5 minutes were spent doing baselines. Claire was using the laser thermometer, which she felt was a waste of time to use in this way. However she took readings from 4 different areas of the room, which didn’t change much over the course of the investigation.

Bedside table top (near window) 15.4 after 15.3

Wall behind door to bathroom 14.6 after 14.5

Back of door wall 14.5 after 14.3

Wall next to the mirror (to left of) 14.1 after 14.2

Claire sat on the bed facing the window wall and Bekki sat next to her also facing the window. Michele and Shaun sat on chairs in the door area.

Bekki heard a few noises which she presumed was the radiator. Michelle said the heating had not been on since April. Claire heard slight noises from the bathroom which were natural to the bathroom, she wasn’t sure if it was those Bekki heard or different ones.
Bekki heard noises like footsteps and asked if anyone was walking in the room at the back of the bed. Shaun said it was an external wall, but Bekki could still hear footsteps there. Claire saw a dark area go over Bekki.

Bekki then said that she felt a cold spot on her right leg, so she took the temperature of it over a period of about 5 minutes. It was constantly fluctuating (24.2, 25.5, 25.4, 25.3, 24.2, 24.9 etc). At one point it went from 24.2 to 14.9, 15.3, 22.4 then carried on fluctuating as before. Bekkis hand got tired so Claire took over for few minutes, there was a o.1 -2 fluctuation but this seemed to settle. No cause was found for the ten degree drop after several things were ruled out by Bekki etc.

Group 2

NGIers - Jay, Dell

Guests - John

Jay took a seat next to the bed and under the TV, Dell sat on the side of the bed and John on the end of the bed. The room was very dark and quiet. Jay held the laser temperature at a spot on the floor and noted that the temperature was fluctuating. Nothing major, but enough to notice.

Dell began calling out and asked if somebody or thing was messing with the temperature within the room, then could the lower the temperature drastically. At this point, John stood up and went to sit in the bathroom which coincided with the temperature in the room dropping. And it dropped a lot – almost 8 degrees over the course of 5 minutes. This wasn’t a recording error as the room felt colder as we were sat within.
Jay and Dell asked John to come back into the room just in case (as unlikely as it would be given the size of the drop) his body temperature was effecting the readings. Strangely, the temperature began to rise again and eventually got back to the levels that it began at (again, over the course of 5 minutes and coinciding with Johns re-entry back into the room proper). Surely 1 persons body temperature couldn’t be affecting the temperature so much? No – it wasn’t, because no sooner as the temperature reached its “normal” level, it began to drop again. Strange indeed.

We then heard footsteps in the corridor outside. Footsteps that seemed to originate from right outside the door to the room we were in. Jay immediately went outside to see if someone was about. The corridor was empty. No sign of anybody. We checked with the rest of the groups later to ask if someone was walking about during this time – nobody was.

Group 3

NGIers - Mark

Guests - Tilly

Tillie was sleeping in the bar area (had a long journey home from holiday this day!) so Mark conducted this vigil on his own. Mark lay on the bed and 'called out' which produced not positive results. Mark also conducted a short EVP experiment which again produced no positive results.

Mark felt fine during this vigil which passed without incident.

Group 3

NGIers - Mark

Guests - Tilly

The wind was really starting to pick up outside of the building at this point.

00.34 Still obsessed with Tillie's temperature, Mark continued to monitor her in this new location. She was now at 20.0ºC and 10 minutes later at 23.2ºC

00.49 Tillie thought she saw a red flash about the size of a penny go across the wooden ceiling beam. This is witnessed just as she opened her eyes after closing them briefly, so she couldn't rule out it being something to do with that.

Mark conducted a short EVP experiment which provided no positive results.

Mark 'called out' which provided no positive results.

Mark had a slight headache all the time he was in this room. The headache vanished when he left the room after the vigil.

The Greenbank - Room 18

A double room. In the main room a large double bed dominated and in a second room, another double bed could be found.
Outside the window of Room 18 there was a flag pole with a flag rustling in the wind. This room could be found atop a tight and dark stairway and was across from room 17.

There was nothing noted within this location that could effect the investigation

Group 2

NGIers - Jay, Dell

Guests - John

Claire replaced Dell for this part of the investigation,
Jay and Claire spent the last of their locations (we’d changed groups around a little during the break) in room 18. Both of them plonked themselves down on the bed and spent the time talking with each other quietly, letting the room “do what it would do” on a normal night if somebody was staying in the room as a guest.

Sadly, though, during the time spent absolutely nothing happened. It would seem the room would just let the occupants get on with whatever they would want to do

Group 3

NGIers - Mark

Guests - Tilly

After Mark and Tillie had been in the room for a couple of minutes, Mark noticed that one of the swing doors of the dresser was wide open. Neither Mark of Tillie has witnessed it open, but were both sure that it had been closed when they entered as it was fairly large and encroached into the room quite a bit. Mark checked the door and found that it did swing open on its own, but when he shut the door ever so slightly no amount of banging and jumping up and down could get it to open on its own.

Mark set up a camera at the foot of the bed to monitor the room.

1.46 Mark and Tillie attempted a Ouija board that was placed on the wooden chest at the foot of the bed with no positive results.

2.00 Mark thinks he heard a noise which sounded like snoring coming from outside on the landing and went to investigate. The noise continued and appeared to be coming from room 17. On trying to open the door Mark found it locked with the key. Mark and Tillie had been in that room previously and had not locked the door. (Further investigation led to Mark finding out that the owner had been up their during the break and locked the door for some reason). No source for the snoring noise was found.
