The historic Golden Fleece is one of the oldest coaching inns in the ancient city of York. Early records show that the inn was about in 1503 and between this time and 1557 it was owned by the Merchant Adventurers.

Function Room
The function room - which also doubled as our base room - was stationed on the second floor, above the main bar area of The Fleece.
The room was a fairly large affair - roughly the size of two standard living rooms and was strewn with numerous small tables and chairs. A small bar occupied one corner of the room and a serving area where cups of tea and coffee could be made sat on the same wall.
In the far corner from the main entrance was a door which led into a small passageway and then a set of stairs that led down to the kitchen area behind the bar downstairs.
Walkaround With Pam
Pam said this location is probable one of the busiest even though nothing much was going on at the moment.
As the rest of the guests prepared to go on their walkabout, one of the guests, Liam, said he could sense a Victorian woman in a long blue dress who walked through the door of the function room and out of the window.
Group 1 Report : Jay Phil Liam Michelle Richard Gemma Vivian
We began our night in the Function Room. After a short while of sitting in the darkness waiting for the room itself to quieten down and waiting for any other groups in the inn to settle into their location, Jay began to call out but we were getting little response.
Liam claimed he could see a man standing in the corner of the room - initially dressed with an apron and then later as a butler. He claimed that the man was called Henry John and that he was telling Liam that there had been a fire. He kept repeating this.
The calling out was still not illiciting any response but suddenly people began reporting cold spots around their legs. Jay tested the areas in question - particularly around Liam and confirmed a few degrees discrepancy in the areas being pointed out. It is possible, however, that the room was getting colder due to now only containing 7 people as opposed to 20 odd ten minutes earlier.
We decided to conduct a glass divination and at first there was no movement in the glass, but then it slowly started to edge towards Vivian after Jay had asked if there was anyone in the room any spirit would like to communicate with. Jay mentioned that it could be a spirit associated with Vivian that was moving the glass and she identified her passed Uncle Matty as a possibility - upon doing this, the glass began to move quicker towards Vivian until it dropped off the edge of the table close to her lap.
Group 2 Report : Claire Pauline Debbie Julie Margo Antony Helen
While Claire was sat in the Function Room on her own before any of the guests arrived she sensed several things but mainly two children: a boy and a girl. She got the names Millie and Tom ... but isn?t really sure whether they came from her imagination or elsewhere. She never got the sense the two children were connected and thinks they just happened to be running about the room.
At one point, she suddenly felt she had her head turned towards the door, where she sensed there was a man called 'Daniel McIntyre'. He was broad and proud. She thinks he was saying something like ''Its the Fleece'' and ranting on about something ... She tends to think he was connected to the inn and he was fiercely defending it or saying it was being used for something that wasn't the right image, like it was 'girly' or something similar! She could see the energy shimmering to the left of the door area very strongly!
Once the group vigil had started, Antonys phone turned itself on without any reason- he said it was impossible for it to do this. Shortly after this Claire saw energy (black and purple) swirling all around him, then, instead of Antony, saw him as a man with short brown straight hair and half his head blown away (the left side). At this point Julie said she could see movement like 'bees' all round the left side of his head. She said it looked like ''half his head was missing''. Just before this Claire got the image in her mind of a huge grey cloud that couldn't be lifted.
Claire once more had her head turned to the doorway again and she sensed Daniel. He was broad with a white/cream top and a brown waistcoat (working waistcoat - leather?). With her eyes she could see energy again in the area, purple and black shimmering all round the left side of the door. Julie said she could see this too despite Claire not mentioning it. Her exact description was ''violet shimmering light by the door then it got really dark''.
We began a glass divination and the glass was moving really consistently. Every time it confirmed yes by twisting anti-clockwise and confirmed no by moving towards the window (this was at least 6+ times we asked for conformation and it was the same each and every time). The moves 'felt' the same too ...not too strong but not weak either.
We asked it it was children but it said no...when asked if it was Daniel McIntyre it said yes.
Summary:
- Daniel McIntyre
- former landlord
- in his 30's
- killed himself
- wants to pass over
One final thing being mentioned here because of something Jay said later in the night when Claire and Jay were waiting in one of the rooms preparing to go for their early train.
Whilst Claire was in the Function Room by herself before the guests arrive she got a link into an "Alien" of the UFO kind but of course naturally dismissed it as she didn't think it was relevant and maybe just her mind wandering.
It was only later, in St Catherines room while she and Jay were chatting about the night that it suddenly became relevent - how so? Well, we don't know.
Jay opened himself up slightly and began getting little things coming in and one of those things he laughed about and said " ... I keep seeing an Alien face .. like a Grey" .. it was only then that Claire piped up that she'd got the same thing earlier .. Has The Fleece had Alien visitors from the Planet Zob? Who knows ..... ???
Group 3 Report : Lee Edward Amanda Paul Joanne Carol
We entered the Function room as our final location and tried a few experiments including calling out and glass divination's but met with no success at all and felt that the room was very quiet.
We then decided to move into the bar area and we sat in the darkness hoping to catch some activity in there instead but again we turned up a blank so spent the rest of our time quietly chatting about the night and other experiences.

The Shambles
On the 3rd floor of The Fleece, and overlooking the UKs most famous cobbled street, you can find The Shambles. Upon entering the room, the visitor is met with a short corridor leading to the master bedroom. On the right of the entrance is a door which leads into a large bathroom. Not surprisingly, a bath, toilet and sink can be found in here as well as a small blocked up fireplace. Above the fireplace is a large mirror.
Through in the bedroom you can find a large four-poster bed, a wardrobe and various other smaller pieces of bedroom furniture, including a small wooden table which was used during the investigation to conduct glass divination experiments.
Walkaround With Pam
Pam began in the Shambles bedroom. In here she said that a happy, nun-like figure watched us. A lady in a grey dress and white hat was likely to touch you in this room.
Also in this room, a man of about 6 foot with sideboards and black hair was angry that people are here. Pam ended with a man called George who was searching for his wife, was also present in this room.
Group 1 Report : Jay Phil Liam Michelle Richard Gemma Vivian
The Shambles turned out to be a very quiet room for ourselves. Initially, Liam went to spend sometime alone in the bathroom and when Jay joined him after a while, Liam mentioned a couple of things. At this moment, he had a sense that the spirits present wouldn't go into the master bedroom, he described it as though they were scared. He then recounted that earlier - during the walkaround - he felt an urge to stand in one of the corners but while there experienced an uncomfortable moment which he described as feeling like he was being "sucked down". Jay mentioned that he had heard reports of a Vortex in this room.
Back in the main room, Gemma, Michelle, Phil, Vivian and Richard had been attempting a glass divination and although the glass did move, it seemingly did so in a random haphazard fashion.
When Jay joined them again, he mentioned how earlier when he, Pam and Claire had been in the room the bed was wobbling without any apparent reason. Jay, Gemma and Michelle stood on three of the posts and gently rested their hands against them. There was no movement detected initially but at a point when Jay wasn't touching, Gemma claimed she felt the bed lift as though something underneath had pushed it up.
Group 2 Report : Claire Pauline Debbie Julie Margo Antony Helen
Earlier in the night Claire was with Pam and Derek (and Jay who later joined us) in the Shambles. Pam was sat on the bed sensing energy and Claire could see it around her as she was saying it. At the same time as Claire saw it 'move' suddenly to her right side Pam jumped up from the bed saying she'd been touched. As they were stood looking at the bed Pam claimed she saw it 'shaking' and put her hand on it...then said 'bloody hell' etc (editor: censored due to a family audience) ... so Claire placed her hand on it and felt it and it was 'pulsing'. Both women could feel this. Claire felt it when there was no-ones hand on the bed also and it was consistent, didn't weaken or fade, just 'pulsed'. Jay and Derek confirmed this pulse and swaying motion of the bed.
On the group vigil Claire kept getting the smell of 'aftershave / deodorant...something she could not quite place.
When she was stood at the foot of the bed (where she had stood and felt the bed 'pulsing' earlier) she looked up and 'saw' a woman's face made of energy briefly on Margo, one of the other group members. Claire tried to hold it but it faded. Margo said at that point she felt fine, but 'oddly warm' whilst sat in that spot she was sat. Claire also claimed she saw violet and green around the bed and Margo at that time for about 2-3 minutes.
Then Claire saw a blue flash to the Left of the her at the pillow end of the bed. Immediately after this Margo jumped up and crawled across the bed and sat in the exact spot. Claire asked her why she'd just gone and sat there and she said she'd 'just had an urge to'.
Other things reported in this room : Strange smells (old man, wet dog, tweed jackets) - 3 of the guests reported this straight away and said they'd smelt them on the medium walk around too. They seemed to come and go. Shadows becoming darker on the bed - again 2 or 3 of the guests reported this. We tried a divination with a glass and the glass moved slowly across the table during the divination but nothing was gained from this.
Finally, on of the guests in the group said that she suddenly got a 'clear ringing note in her left ear'.
Group 3 Report : Lee Edward Amanda Paul Joanne Carol
In this location we tried glass divination, calling out and taking turns sitting alone in the bathroom. No one sensed or felt anything in this location. A few creaks were heard but this sounded like natural settling of the building and nothing paranormal.

The Minster Suite
On the top floor of The Fleece you can find The Minster Suite which looks out over the Shambles - a cobbled street within York.
On first entering the suite - you come across a small living area complete with fireplace, small couch and a wooden box like table which we would use for glass divinations. There was a large window in this room that had earlier been noted let a bit of a breeze into the room.
Along a small corridor could be found the master bedroom which contained a four-poster bed, a wardrobe and other small pieces of furniture.
Walkaround With Pam
On the top floor is the Minster Suite and in here Pam said that Mary, George?s wife roams about here looking for George. Pity he didn't follow us to this room and that would be one problem solved!
Group 1 Report : Jay Phil Liam Michelle Richard Gemma Vivian
Before any of the guests had arrived - Jay and Claire were in the Minster Suite just having a look around and getting familiar with The Fleece. Upon entering the room - Jay immediately picked up on a woman, dressed in a blue / grey dress and wearing a white headdress on her head. He claimed he could see her with her hands together as though in prayer and said that her name was Ann or Anna. He deduced from this that she was perhaps a nun but he also got the sense that she was involved in nursing. One thing he claimed, which was strange, was that as he held her in his mind - she kept turning and 'hissing' at him, her face twisting and contorting and snarling into something similar to the old vampire films where the vampire would be trying to intimidate the Hero. Claire mentioned that she had a build up of malice and anger which seemed to be directed at Jay himself.
Wanting to escape Claires wrath - Jay wandered to the bedroom and laid down on the bed. As he lay there - he called through to Claire in the living area, claiming he had a pulsing and a pressure building within his ears. Gradually the feeling spread out over his body and he described the sensation that something seemed to be lying on top of him. Claire came through the bedroom at this point and said that she saw a black mass of energy floating above the bed where Jay lay.
During the group vigil, we entered the Minster Suite and predominantly stayed within the living area - although Liam went through to the bedroom and lay on the bed.
Jay began calling out and tried to challenge whatever spirit or entity existed in this room to come forward and make its presence known. During this challenge, the room temperature began to drop. A change of minus five degrees within a minute was recorded and everybody reported getting colder and colder. This coldness wasn't isolated but existed right throughout the living area, bedroom and the corridor between the two.
At the coldest, the group began a glass divination and again the glass began to move although with nothing spectacular to report. As we did the divination, the temperature slowly began to rise again.
Richard (a self confessed sceptic) asked a question : why would the temperature drop if a spirit entered the room? As we discussed possible answers - one of which was Richard suggesting the spirits make it go cold to make you uncomfortable so that you leave - the temperature recorder once more began to drop and we watched the reading drop 0.1 a degree at a time until again we were 5 degrees colder in the room than previously. Again, this had occurred in a period of about one minute and again, right throughout the Minster Suite.
Group 2 Report : Claire Pauline Debbie Julie Margo Antony Helen
When we did the vigil within The Minster Suite we got very little. In the bedroom a temperature fluctuation of 2 degrees in three corners of the room in two minutes, but nothing we'd say was odd about that except it went warmer, not colder! Nothing odd though, probably just our body heat warming the room up a bit.
It was still cold in the room however and we all claimed we were freezing. When doing the glass divination and sat on the floor most of the guests complained it was icier than icy but there were no temperature fluctuations recorded. It remained steady.
We did hear quite a loud 'click' coming from the bedroom / bathroom area but we put this down to the bathroom door not having closed fully and just clicking itself properly.
Group 3 Report : Lee Edward Amanda Paul Joanne Carol
This room was a lot colder than the rest. Saying that it was on the top floor so didn't have the insulation effect of the other rooms. The size of the room too and the fact the heating was off would influence the readings too.
We tried calling out but got nothing.
Edward tried scrying in the large mirror but nothing happened and the glass divination produced no results either.
So we got the pendulums out and tried these.
Edward tried it first and after determining yes and no directions we asked these questions and got the following answers.
- Are you Male ? Yes
- Are you Female ? No
- Are you called William? Yes
- Did you die in this room? Yes
- Joanne at this point said her ears felt like they were popping.
- Were you murdered? Yes
- Are there other spirits with us? Yes
- Are there two? Yes
- Will you use the glass to talk through? Yes
- Are you strong enough to effect or touch someone? Yes
The temperature dropped two degrees at this point (over a minute or so) and then got nothing more. Edward?s hand did shake a number of times so I can?t take the answers to those questions seriously as they may have been effected by Edward.
The EMF meter clicked a couple of times then stopped.

St.Catherines And Lady Pecketts
We decided to join the two rooms at the back of The Fleece into one even though they were on two different floors. The reason for this was because Lady Pecketts room was quite small in comparison to the other rooms in The Fleece and it would have been awkward and difficult to fit everybody inside comfortably.
St Catherines room, with its uneven floors which made you think you'd stepped into a room from Alice in Wonderland, contained two single beds, a wonky wardrobe, a few smaller pieces of furniture and an adjoining bathroom with the usual accompaniment.
Lady Pecketts room was furnished the same albeit the room was maybe half the size of St Catherines and with no wonky floor.
Walkaround With Pam
It seemed that the nun and George had followed us into Lady Pecketts room. Pam came up with the name Sister Ann. A guest called Helen said she could smell Lavender.
The walkabout ended in St Catherine?s Room. Pam said that there is a lot of activity in this room, spirits running about. One of the guests thought they saw a flash over by a large mirror in the room. This room also contains the bathroom that was created from a room that had been bricked up and lost for almost 200 years. The smell in here was indicative of old damp!
On the 2nd walk around, Claire reported that some of the guests reported smelling lavender and another of the guests was crying after leaving claiming that Lady Pecketts felt 'evil'.
Group 1 Report : Jay Phil Liam Michelle Richard Gemma Vivian
The final location of the night for our group - Lady Pecketts and St Catherines - proved to be the quietest activity wise, of the whole night.
Barely anything was recorded other than at one point, whilst sat in St Catherines, Jay picked up on little girl with golden blonde locks in pigtails and wearing a blue and white checkered dress with red shoes. Just as Jay was describing the girl - Vivian, who sat on one of the beds, cried out and jumped and claimed that something had just touched one of her legs.
Nothing else was reported or recorded in these two rooms.
Group 2 Report : Claire Pauline Debbie Julie Margo Antony Helen
We got very little in these two rooms. The only interesting things to note was that we split into two groups and one of the groups (4 guests) only lasted about one minute in Lady Pecketts as they felt the room was too 'spooky'.
When we went up to Lady Pecketts as a group a few of the guests claimed they hated this room and felt uncomfortable sitting in there.
Group 3 Report : Lee Edward Amanda Paul Joanne Carol
EMF was within normal range except around light switches as expected. Temperature and humidity was low ? but then it was freezing outside!
We tried various communication techniques.
Glass divination had no results.
Calling out had no results.
We all felt comfortable in this room (St. Catherines) and sensed nothing unusual. So we went upstairs to the Lady Peckett room as this was still part of our first location.
Amanda said that she had a tingling feeling down one side. I asked if it was the way she sat on the bed and once she moved the feeling stopped.
I noticed that the TV screen appeared to have a dull glow. I pulled the plug in case it was to do with that. As expected the screen faded black. Plugged it back on and it returned to a slight glow. All TV?s in the rooms had this I found after comparing them.
We split up between the two rooms now so people could do their own thing. Back in St Catherines Amanda said she felt a tingle run down her spine and the pen in her pocket came out. She could not rule out the possibility of it falling out.
Before the location ended, we attempted table tipping. The table did shake a couple of times but I felt it may have been influenced by us rather than anything else.
