Bowes Railway Museum - The Loco Shed
This is a 1930s built brick building incorporating as a party wall one of the stone tub shop walls. Equipped with a pit and a travelling crane this is the area where locomotives were repaired. The shed road is also equipped with shear-legs for locomotive lifts.
This shed carries on the same function today with the repair and housing of some of the locomotives on the railway. Two locomotives were housed in the shed when we visited.
There was evidence of dust that rose from The Pit which could interfere with any photographs that were taken.
The three locations in this section (Exhibition Room, Loco Shed and Blacksmiths) where possibly all open plan in the past, but wall separators have been installed although the roof area is still open meaning sound could travel between the three locations.
Baseline Report
There was nothing noted within this location that could effect the investigation
Environment Readings
No baseline readings were taken in this location
Pre-Investigation Walkaround
Before any investigation starts some members of Northern Ghost Investigations including our own resident medium (or guest mediums if present) like to have a walk around the investigation site and then record their own first impressions. What follows are details of the first impressions of those who did do a walk around.
Medium Walkaround With Guest Medium Eddie Nicol
In the train shed Eddie sensed a 40ish year old man who had a harsh and hard appearance and gave the impression that he'd been robbed of his life far too soon.
His death was one where he knew he was dying from a head injury and felt regret and panic that he never got to show people who he really was.
Group Vigils
What follows are the group vigils that took place in this location.
Note : These vigils are presented purely in Group Order and in no way reflect the order
in which each group visited the location during the night.
Group 1
NGIers - Jay, Claire
Guests - Joanne, Paul, Heidi, Steve, Carol
Our final location for the night was the Loco Shed and similar to the Blacksmiths proved to be quiet.
We settled down and tried to make contact using a Ouija Board and although there was some movement it was difficult to determine whether this was due to spirit or peoples shaking hands due to the cold! We never managed to get any sensible message, whatever the cause of the movement, from it however.
It would appear that the bottom end of Bowes was devoid of any activity. As mentioned above, the Blackmiths next door had proved to be quiet and so too was the Loco Shed.
There was only one real moment of a 'possible' event and that involved one of the trains that we knew an image of a man had been captured on camera within by a previous visitor. As Jay was leaning inside the cab trying to pick up on anything he could hear a breathing inside.
It wasn't his own breath however there may have been a rationale explanation and that was that Steve was stood nearby and behind where Jay was leaning and the enclosed space within the cab could have been picking up on Steves breath and amplifying it. This wasn't certain, but it seemed a reasonable explanation at the time.
Group 2
NGIers - Carl, Sharon
Guests - Pauline, Bekki, Paul, Lee, Jonny
After settling down and taking humidity and temperature readings and taking photos Carl started doing a Ouija board with 3 members of the group while Sharon was videoing one other member tried using a pendulum, after several minutes we gave up and joined the rest of the team at the Ouija board.
They were doing well, getting information on a man named Michael Jempz who was working in the pits there when he died. He suffocated from the gases in the pit, it took 3 days for him to die alone. He was 54 when he died in 1835. He was married with 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl. Michael wasn't giving us any more new information so Carl closed the board and we took some final readings - humidity 77% and temp 8.2 degrees.
Group 3
NGIers - Lee, Wayne
Guests - Viv, Paula, Vicky, Leigh
Before we began any experiments I talked to the guests about the equipment we use and why we use it. I showed them the EMF meter and humidity and temperature reader and explained what the readings may indicate. Wayne placed a glowing plastic strip on an anvil as a trigger object. The lights were switched off and our first 45 minutes began.
We moved to the Ouija Board to see if we could get anything from it as on previous occasions it has never worked for me. On this occasion it did work and the following letters were spelled out when asked for a name of any spirit present. KDK EMOGO. The second attempt was no better with GWDWDJ.
A few suggestions were made to answer this seemingly random letter string.
The spirit is illiterate or doesn't know how to use the board. The spirit was messing about. One or some of the group influenced it?s movement. I tend to go with the third option but there is no way that can be proved and nor can the first two! Wayne then called out to ask for any spirits that may be present to affect one of us or move items. He asked for a tap or knock on specific items or to throw something ? all to no avail.
I then called out and asked for something to happen. I wasn't as polite as Wayne and I questioned the existence of spirits at all and mocked Eddie?s suggestion that they were mischievous and disruptive, as nothing had occurred to verify his claim. As expected, nothing happened so while Wayne and the guests continued to take photos and call out; I walked into the neighboring room though as it was so dark I had to use the infrared camcorder window to see where I was going.
Strangely, as I walked into the room, the sheer darkness felt as though it resisted me like a dark, heavy veil. I no longer felt alone, as if something was trying to prevent me coming in. I felt pleased at the change in atmosphere and hoped something would become of it. I called over to the group and said that we may have better luck in this room. But as they came into the room ? the feeling left. Wayne said he felt as though it was back in the original room, somewhere in the corner.
What did we get for our time in here then?
Viv felt pins and needles in her hands. Wayne felt pressure in his head. I sensed the change of atmosphere. To end on an interesting note - I asked for anything in the room to influence the thermometer by raising it to 12 degrees ? currently is said 9.6. Slowly but surely in crept up to 12 degrees though it took 5 minutes to do so.
Was it the wind outside warming up the air inside by blowing under the loose fitting doors? Was it because I was holding the device? Or was it something else, something paranormal? Hmmm.
Time was up so we headed back to base for a hot chocolate and a warm up.
Group 4
NGIers - Kris, Sue
Guests - Kirk, Teresa, Jennifer, Stuart
Our first location of the night seemed quite quiet to what was to follow, there was the 6 of us in our team, we tried to find a place to sit quiet and let the place settle to get used to the noises of the room, we sat for about 5-10mins in silence, we took a few photos, some 'orbs' were found on some pics, other pics there was nothing.
Sue felt there was two spirit men in that room, but she couldn't get much info from this, Kris felt that there was a male spirit there but he didn't want to come forward it seemed as if he just wanted to hide in the shadows. So one of the guests tried dowsing of a way of communicating and getting more info (through dowsing she got a lady who was linked to the area). Another one of the guests smelt a strange smell in the same place of that room.
