NGI

The Castle Keep stands on a steep sided promontory overlooking the River Tyne. It is a readily defensible site which has been occupied for nearly 2000 years. Flint flakes and a stone axe head found in archaeological excavations hint at prehistoric activity.

Garrison And Chapel

The ground floor of the Keep consisted of two main areas - the Garrison Room and The Chapel.

The Garrison was a fairly large open room with a pillar reaching from the floor to the rood. Situated around the room was a number of 'headstones' with various descriptions on them, a couple of stone statues and a storage cupboard. There was also a blocked up fireplace in the room. At the top of some some stairs was another room known as The Pit which it was said used to be used as a holding room like a small cell.

Down a very short passageway was The Chapel area. Upon first entering, you enter a small room off the side of the chapel, which contains only a small font. Passing through an open doorway you enter the chapel proper. This is the most lit area within the whole Keep with large arch shaped windows looking out onto the streets of Newcastle. There is no furniture in the chapel at all, its completely empty, other than a few Norman headstones that have been moved and stored here from a nearby cemetery.

Group 1 Report : Jay Beth Felicity Stephen Andrea Paul

Jay and Paul went into the chapel and Steven and Felicity went into the small room at the top of the stairs within the garrison Room. Andrea and Beth sat down and waited a few minutes while every thing settled. Andrea called out. At first both felt fine then after 5 minutes the room seemed to become very dark in a certain area in front of them. It then became very cold around them. Beth Felt a Little uneasy and Andrea confirmed that the room did seem like it was getting darker in a certain area of the room.

After a few minutes Andrea and Beth both said that they saw a long white light near the fireplace. It was very long and then went smaller and disappeared. This happened on a few occasions. Also not long after they both heard footsteps or movement to the right of them.

After a few more minutes they both walked over to the fireplace where they had seen the light before but they felt fine. Both of them tried calling out but no responses. After a few more minutes they joined Jay and Paul in the chapel and minutes later Stephen and Felicity joined them in the chapel.

Stephen and Falicity tried using the Ouija board in the smaller room at the top of the stairs in the garrison room but got no responses.

Group 2 Report : Carl Sharon Carol Cath Wayne

We were joined at this time by Faye. Faye said it did not feel the same as before the readings were 18.6 degrees 67% humidity

We went into small room up steps in Garrison Room. Carl thought he saw a flash on the wall. Everyone then saw a light on the wall.

Faye sensed a man possibly in his 50?s he was wearing jeans and jumper, he had dark hair seamed to be wheezing. The name Peter was also sensed by Faye he was an intelligent man. There was a flash in the doorway at this point. Peter liked cars and was into Antiquities possibly Archaeology.

At this point we moved to the Stone Room and Chapel nothing really happened at these locations only thing is Carl heard a whistle.

Group 3 Report : Lee Kris Sue Anthony Julia Claire

When the investigation started, our team began in the garrison room.

While I was setting up my camcorder to record what we were about to do, I noticed on the screen that a strange vertical light was twinkling in the middle of the room. It was about a metre long, shimmered, elongated, shortened, rotated, shortened than vanished. I was so gob smacked by what I?d seen I had not set the record button.

I couldn't believe my stupidity and when I asked the team if they'd seen it, they?d all said no. I hope to try and capture this event later.

I found when talking to Andrea and Beth later in the night that they too had seen the anomaly in the same area, but with their naked eyes and at a different time to me. They did not capture it on film either but at least someone else saw it so I know it wasn?t a unique experience.

Sue tried calling out to start with but nothing replied. Sue felt she sensed a male spirit. After 10 minutes we all went into the pit room.

Sue, Kris and the guests tried the Ouija board but nothing occurred.

Sue, Kris and a guest tried the pendulum but again there was nothing other than the 'possibility' there 'may' be more than one spirit present. No one else could confirm this. We were then joined by our guest medium, Fay, who said she could sense something but not very strong in the corner of the room. She tried the Ouija board but again without success. I asked if it was possible that the spirit may ether be illiterate or just not understand how the Ouija works.

Queens And Mezzanine Chamber

The middle floor of the Keep was designated as the second location and consisted of 2 separate areas with a side room attached to the first of these two areas - The Queens Chamber.

Just on the inside of the the entrance was a fairly large room with a number of display cases telling the history of the castle. To the side of this was another room which contained a mock up of a bedroom from olden times with a couple of waxwork dummies taking up the role of the rooms occupants.

Just down a set of stairs was the Mezzanine Chamber - a relatively small room with absolutely no furniture and only a single small window that looks out onto the streets of Newcastle. On one wall there looks to be a disused and blocked up fireplace.

Group 1 Report : Jay Beth Felicity Stephen Andrea Paul

The middle floor seemed to be the quietest of the three areas we had to cover on the night, with little or next to nothing to report in the way of activity.

Even the Mezzanine chamber - which on previous visits to the Keep by NGI - had always felt as though it had some type of atmosphere contained within failed to deliver.

We were joined by Fay in the Mezzanine chamber and she said she could pick up on the spirits of two young boys in the room who seemed to be linked in somewhere - they were refusing to come forward, but Fay figured that they were probably brothers and died at the same time.

Back up in the Queens Chamber, we had an 'almost' moment that certainly woke everyone up. Jay was calling out and at one point he asked for any spirit present to make a double knocking sound if they could hear him.

Immediately there was a loud knock-knock in the room which caused everyone to stop and look around at each other with eyes wide open and hearts beating a little faster than previously.

Sadly, we later found out that someone upstairs had dropped their torch at roughly that time and described exactly what the noise sounded like as it hit the floor - exactly what we'd heard in the Queens Room. Oh well. Nearly.

Group 2 Report : Carl Sharon Carol Cath Wayne

As Andrea and Sharon were setting up the trigger object in the Queen?s Chamber they left the room for a second and the sensors went off, they went back into the room to find the coins they had placed on the divider had moved. They reset the sensors thinking someone may have accidentally lent over and broken the beam. At about 21:35 the sensors went off again, even though we thought they weren't turned on, this time all the coins had moved, some had even changed the order in which they had been placed by the team. The camera Carl and Sharon had charged that afternoon suddenly stopped working at the same time.

At 12:30 we started our vigil in the Mezzanine Chamber - 19.6 degrees 61% humidity. We sat silently for a few minutes so we could get used to the room and the darkness, One of the ladies saw a green light on the wall, it disappeared after a few seconds. We weren?t getting much down there so we decided to move up to the Queen?s Chamber.

Queen's Chamber 17.7 degrees 79% humidity.

Wayne got his pendulum out and started asking questions, he got a young lady in her mid-thirties, there was more than one spirit with us. Some members of the team separated from us to investigate the Base Room while the rest of us stayed in the Queen?s Chamber. We weren't getting anything more from the pendulum so Wayne left Sharon on her own and joined the rest of the team in the Base Room. After a couple of minutes the sensors in the Queen?s Chamber went off, giving Sharon a fright!! When she had calmed down she explained she saw what she thought was a white light pass through the sensor beam and heard someone breathe a second before they went off, everyone joined her in the chamber after this and Carl and Wayne both got the name Ann and Wayne heard ?be gone?. This was the end of our time in the chamber.

After we held the s?ance our last location was the Garrison Room 19.4 degrees 68% humidity

We were joined at this time by Faye. Faye said it did not feel the same as before the readings were 18.6 degrees 67% humidity

We found this location to be the quietest of all the locations in the Keep.

After we went into the mezzanine, Sue and Kris sensed a male presence but no response was found after our communication attempts. One of the guests thought a female was present when asking her pendulum for a response.

Great Hall And Kings Chamber

The uppermost floor in the Keep was classed as Location 3 and consisted of one main room - The Great Hall - which had a number of little rooms attached to it, most notable of those was the Kings Chamber.

The Great Hall was a large room with little in the way of furniture - a couple of display cases at most. In a side room, the Kings Chamber had a small amount of furniture and a small corridor leading off to what was once upon a time, a lavatory.

Up a set of stairs and through a small open doorway there was a small empty chamber with a pitched black corridor leading to another blocked toilet area.

On an even higher level, overlooking the Great Hall, was a passageway that was known as The Galleries. This passage circumnavigated the Great Hall and allowed people to look down on the Great Hall. The stairs up to the Galleries also led to the roof of the Keep.

Group 1 Report : Jay Beth Felicity Stephen Andrea Paul

Jay, Beth, Steven and Felcity all went up to the top of the gallery to investigate while Andrea remained in the The great hall alone. She waited there a few minutes and remained seated in the hall. She felt fine. A few times she felt a draught or a breeze but she could rationalize it. After a few more minutes of sitting in the great hall she went over to the well room. She called out. She thought she heard a few clicks but nothing else. The clicks could have been coming from anywhere.

After a few more minutes she walked over to the Kings Chamber. After calling out and asking for a sign there was 2 loud clicks in the room to the right of her so she walked over to where she heard the noise and called out again but no response.

After a few more minutes she went back into the great hall and sat down again. After about 3 minutes of sitting she felt something touch her hand she thinks it could have been a wind-chill or just a breeze but it felt very soft and that?s what made her jump.

Meanwhile, reports from the galleries which ran around the Great Hall varied somewhat. Steve and Felicity reported very little activity both there and up on the roof - while Jay and Beth felt there was a presence of sorts wandering around the tight corridor of the gallery behind them.

Numerous times they both felt they heard a slight footstep in the corridor behind them and at one point Beth claimed she thought she could see a figure at the far end from where they were stood. Jay went to investigate but could see nothing.

Group 2 Report : Carl Sharon Carol Cath Wayne

Two of the group went to investigate the Well Room, they used a crystal an old man whose name began with C, possibility of kids but no definite response.

At 11:15 Carl heard a noise from inside the King?s Chamber, he went inside and started calling out. No response. Another noise was heard from the King's Chamber, all the group decided to go and investigate.

King?s Chamber 19.4 degrees 69% humidity

The same noise was heard by every member of the group, after investigating decided it was the side handles from the chest banging, don?t know how, maybe paranormal?

Back inside the Great Hall a couple of members of the group heard breathing. Carl asked any spirits to show us they were with us, Wayne heard a man say ? I have done? in response. Sharon took a temperature reading at this point, 24.1 degrees 62% humidity, a 4 degree raise from the first reading. After a few minutes of relaxing and calling out the thermometer crashing to the floor with no explanation, at the same time Wayne heard laughter and got the name John, surname maybe Longill or DeLongill. We left after this.

Group 3 Report : Lee Kris Sue Anthony Julia Claire

Our next location at 12.30 was the Great Hall where we had held a seance.

Sounds were heard as well as a cool breeze. I investigated both and found the noise to be a flagpole rattling in the wind and the breeze came from a window in the Kings chamber and the main entrance. Fay sensed there was a presence over by the well room. Kris said he could feel a tingle and heard a noise in the gallery. The temperature and humidity remained unchanged.

We then walked around the gallery; this over looks the great hall. Again, there was nothing - just darkness. I believe there is a lot of psychology at play here. People are hoping for an experience, we?re in a reputedly haunted location, there is no light and we?re all wary of what may happen next.

So far I had sensed nothing or captured anything. Orbs that I'd seen on camera on closer inspection are dust particles - this shows up quite clearly on the infrared footage.
