The Busby Stoop Inn, at Kirby Wiske - a village near Thirsk in North Yorkshire - takes it odd name from the 18th century owner Thomas Busby and the hangmans gibbet across the road from where Thomas Busbys remains were displayed after he had been hung for the murder of his father-in-law in 1702.

The Barn

Accessed from the car park situated next to the Busby Stoop stood what was once a bricked barn in the days that the inn was an actual coaching inn. Currently, it was being used as a storage area for bikes and old furniture.

The Barn was split into two halves - one half was the storage area while the other half was the home of the current landlord and landlady's Yorkshire Terrier family. We could naturally only gain access to the storage area.

Approximately 20 foot by 10 foot, the section of the barn where we gained access to wasn't the largest of locations and when the barn door was closed, the barn itself was pitched black.

Due to a alight gap under the barn door and a couple of small holes in the roof, it was possible that drafts that people experienced or noises that would heard, could be a result of the wind blowing. There was also a possibility that the sleeting conditions outside would result in small drips and taps that could be heard in the barn.

One thing that wouldn't be mistaken (hopefully) for anything else was the growl of mother Yorkshire Terrier in the 2nd half of the barn who wasn't best pleased at a few ghost investigators interrupting her pups sleep.

Walkaround With Guest Medium - Ralph Keeton

Immediately upon arriving, Ralph was drawn to the barn area and straight away could smell burning and the presence of 2 men.

One of the men was a stronger presence than the other. Ralph felt that this man was somebody associatedwith the coaching inn and he would have been what Ralph initially described as a policeman or a warder or someone similar who was in charge of the comings and goings at the inn.

He felt that this man suffered from an affliction as Ralph had pains in his arms and his joints and then he was finding it difficult to put his left foot flat on the floor, needing to stand on the front part of his foot, rather than his heel.

He felt this man would be responsible for tapping sounds in the barn and would upset and aggravate the dogs in the inaccessiblepart of the barn. Ralph also felt that the man moved a around a lot in the barn and would possibly be seen as fast wispy movement out of the corner of a persons eye.

Ralph also pointed to a small living area associated with this man - although at first he thought it had been demolished - but when he came across the small wash room accessed from the kitchens, it was exactly what he had seen.

Later in the night, Ralph described this man some more and associated the name or title of "Squire" to him or something very similar.

Group 1 Report : Jay Sue Danny Kris Nikki

We headed off to the barn as our first location and stood quiet while we waited for everything to calm down. From the room next door, where the dogs were to sleep for the night, we heard periodic movement and growling.

We began to call out - with Ralph leading the way - and did get a few responses that were notable. Sue mentioned that she could see a dark shadow in the rafters of the barn and took a photo of the area which did show something not quite right (photo coming soon!).

Jay commented on how he felt he was being shoved slightly in his back. Or thats how he described it. Although he could not feel anything on his back, he kept feeling himself swaying forward as you would if you had been pushed. At one point he stumbled forward slightly as a result of this.

Kris began to complain about a pain in his lower leg, andRalph confirmed that he too had earlier had pains in his lower legs whilst in the barn. No explanation for this could be found.

Group 2 Report : Nikki Dell Carl Sharon Chris Karen

Sharon, Carl, Karen and Chris did not take part in Location 2's Group Vigil so Nikki and Dell headed outside to the Barn.

We spent 25 minutes in the barn. Both Nikki and Dell thought they could see a shadow at the bottom of the door, they thought maybe it was the dogs but on closer inspection they could confirm that it wasn't the dogs. Other than that, we felt the barn was not very active at all. However, just before leaving the barn after 25 minutes Dell's batteries had gone flat on his torch even though they were new that day.

Group 3 Report : Dave Bruce Andrea Zoe Michael

This was our final location, Zoe and Mike did not come with us to the barn, so Andrea, Dave and Bruce headed over in the freezing cold to the Barn outside within the car park.

We stood in the barn for a few minutes to let everything calm down as we heard the dogs barking. Once it was all quiet Andrea started to call out. She asked for a spirit to knock, as soon as she asked there was 2 knocks coming from the left side corner of the room bruce heard these first. Then after calling out again Andrea heard them as well.
We heard taps or clicks coming from around us, we could also hear the rain so maybe thought it was the rain.

Dave now called out and we could hear another slight knock coming from in frontof us. Andrea thought she could see a dark shadow in the corner of the room but she was unsure as it was very dark in the barn. Even though the barn is very cold we felt like there was a breeze going around us it was so cold. After 15 more minutes we left the barn and joined the rest of Northern Ghost Investigations.

The Bar Area

Our second location of the night included the main bar / restaurant area and the attached kitchens.

The L-Shaped bar and restaurant also served as our base room. The bar ran the length of the inn - the serving bar at one end and a pool table situated at the bottom end. Here we set up a stationary camera that took in and recorded any activity in the bar.

Attached to the bar was a large kitchen area with ovens and fridges. Dominating the center of the kitchen was a very large metallic table where we set up a couple of experiments and also a couple of motion scanners. Through the back door situated in the kitchen, we could access a small courtyard area - one half of the barn containing the dogs could be accessed here and also a small wash room which showed signs of once containing a fireplace and chimney - old living quarters.

Walkaround With Guest Medium - Ralph Keeton

Upon entering the bar area Ralph, walking around, felt that something didn't want him to walk to the bottom part of the bar near to the pool table - he felt as though something was physically pushing him back.

He had the sense that the bar was all backside first, as though it had once been arranged very differently to what it was today. He also felt that there had been a "men only" area joined on to the bar once.

Ralph picked up on a well which he said was underneath the bar andwe later found out that the original cellar was directly under the bar area and it was constantlyflooded with spring water.

Ralph picked up on the presence of a big burly man who seemed to be acting as a peace maker between two competing spirits in the inn, but it seemed to be this man that was objecting to Ralph making his way to the bottom of the bar.

Group 1 Report : Jay Sue Danny Kris Nikki

We found the bar area to be extremely quiet in the way of recognisable activity. As a team, we split ourselves up with Jay and Nikki heading to the kitchen and courtyard while the others stayed in the bar.

This, however, brought no luck andour time in this location was completely uneventful, although Jay did spend some time in the laundry room whichcould be found off the courtyard at the back of the inn (which Ralph had earlier described as being a former living quarters) and he did pick up one or two sounds that were out of the ordinary, though he could not discount the weather outside.

Group 2 Report : Nikki Dell Carl Sharon Chris Karen

We found this area of the location to be extremely quiet from an activity point of view.

Nikki didn't pick up any spirit communication and upon calling out, we didn't get any notable responses.

Ralph was still talking to the landlord and landlady about things that had been brought up in the seance and so we spent some of our time listening and contributing to the conversation.

Group 3 Report : Dave Bruce Andrea Zoe Michael

We went to our first Location which was the bar area, kitchen's etc.

At the beginning our guest medium was in the room with us conducting his walkabout. Once Ralph was finished we started our Vigil. We sat quiet for a while and Andrea called out. Bruce said he felt a very cold draught around his face and also Mike felt cold as well.

Andrea thought she could hear something behind them near the pool table it sounded like something been dropped. After 15 minutes we decided to spilt up and Andrea went into the ladies toilets, Dave into the men's Toilets, Zoe in the kitchen, Mike went into the dining area and Bruce stayed within the bar area.

While Andrea was in the Ladies toilets she felt a very cold draught around her hands but on checking the door and window there was no draughts and the temperature did drop from 14.3 to 14.1c within the matter of seconds. She also thought one of the corner's in the toilets looked like it was getting darker all the time after 5 more minutes she left to join the rest of the group. Zoe and mike felt ok, Dave felt very cold in the men's toilets and Bruce was ok as well.

Room 4

Up some stairs and along a small corridor which we had been informed was active was Room 4.

With floorspace dominated by two beds, room 4 could just about hold 4 people sitting on the beds. Contained within the room through a doorway was a bathroom and next door to Room 4 was another bathroom that could be used by any who stayed in the inn.

Walkaround With Guest Medium - Ralph Keeton

While walking up the stairs to get to room 4, Ralph could sense an accident that had taken place on the stairs, someone had fell (or been pushed) down the stairs. He also felt that the current stairway was not the original.

Again, like the barn, he said a wispy dark figure would be and could be seen on the stairs and in the corridor (Carol - the landlady of the Busby Stoop - had seen this very thing) and Ralph claimed that footsteps would be heard walking along the corridor (again, this had been reported).

In room 4 itself, Ralph could pick up on a conflict that was taking place - a conflict for dominance between 2 spirits. Upon entering the room Nikki, who was accompanying Ralph on the walkabout, claimed that she felt very uncomfortable in this room.

When Ralph started to talk about another spirit in the room who seemed to worry and stress out about everything we heard accompanying knocks in the room. We asked for more knocks, and more where heard.

The 2 spirits that were in conflict here were thought to be 2 brothers.

Again, Ralph picked up on the man from the barn here - the "Squire" man with the afflictions - it was felt he walks around these corridors too. Again, Ralph wasn't too sure if "Squire" was a tile or name (felt it could have been "Spire") but he also picked up on the name "Jack" associated with this man.

Group 1 Report : Jay Sue Danny Kris Nikki

We found the upstairs locations to be the most active within the entire inn.

We began by sitting quietly in Room 4 on the 2 beds that were available, although Kris decided to go sit alone in the bathroom next door.

One we had allowed the location to quieten and settle, we gathered in a small circle, holding hands, and began a calling out session. Jay recounted the story of Thomas Busby and how he had been hung and so we tried to focus on andcalled out for him to communicate with us. Almost immediately we began to get a few responses in the room and everyone reported a drop in temperature.

At one point we heard footsteps on the corridor and when we asked out again for the footsteps. Maybe it was just in response to this, but a few minutes after the footsteps Kris asked eveyone where we thought a spirit would be right at that point andeveryone replied in unison 'standing in the doorway'. Those withtheir back to the door felt what they described as an 'uneasiness' with the door and they said they kept looking towards it.

We'd set up a night vision camera in the corridor, but it had picked up nothing out of the ordinary during this period.

Group 2 Report : Nikki Dell Carl Sharon Chris Karen

We started in our First Location at 12.30am. After some time Nikki's battery was dead already and Nikki sensed the name Sophie.

There was also a temperature drop and rise within a short time which seemed unusual. Around 12.55am Knocks could be heard in the bathroom and also at 1.05am more knocks could be heard coming from the bathroom.

Also in the bathroom Andrea and Nikki had set up a trigger object Experiment and the coin had seemed to have moved. After a little while longer in this location we ended the vigil and joined the rest of NGI for our full team seance lead by our Guest Medium Ralph.

Group 3 Report : Dave Bruce Andrea Zoe Michael

Our next Location was upstairs so we headed up there after taking part in a full team seances lead by Ralph our guest medium for the night.

We all sat down and waited for a few minutes for everything to calm down.

The rain could be heard outside. Andrea thought she could hear footsteps coming from the corridor but knew there was no one about. Zoe said she could see Green Flashes in the bedroom, she felt very uneasy and she left the bedroom and headed next to the main bathroom.

Andrea, Mike, Dave and Bruce stayed in the bedroom. Andrea thought she saw a white flash in the bathroom next to where she was sitting in the bedroom but she couldn't be sure if it was the light from the night vision cam.

Bruce called out and we thought we could hear some clicks. Zoe rejoined us in the bedroom and Dave and Bruce went into the bathroom for a few minutes. Andrea, Zoe and Mike remained in the bedroom and straight away all three felt very cold indeed like there was a big breeze around the room. Zoe told Andrea about a spirit girl called Sophie who she has spoke to a few times. She drowned in a near by lake but visited The Busby Stoop. She also told Andrea that she had seen a few other spirits as well. The next day Andrea was looking through the reports ready to send them to Jay and in group 2 Nikki had come up with the name Sophie. Nikki was not aware of what Zoe had told Andrea at the investigation.
